Almost half a century ago a scene was unfolding, that happens every day.  A desperate cry for help came from an alley of a Southern city at dusk in June of 1964.  An eleven-year-old girl had been kidnapped and was being viciously mauled and beaten and raped by a gang of about a dozen  teenagers.  But this time -  fate, or  luck, or  the  fact that it was  just time - the ending would be different.

This time an athletic twenty-two year old, 6’1” 200 lb., former  defensive  end on  his  college football team, and a self-defense karate  instructor, happened to hear the cries, and  intervened. The ensuing battle was merciless and brief, as he dispatched  the  gang  in seconds, rescuing the tortured little girl.

This incident, augmented by the girl’s father’s belief in the now worthlessness of his daughter, was the catalyst that began the anti-rape, sexual assault awareness movement.

Any movement has to have a catalyst.  Something that sets off  a chain reaction of feelings in answer to a violation against humanity. Often   out  of  nowhere, as  much  because - of fate , or luck, or the fact that  it  is  just  time -  comes  the  fires of  enthusiasm  and  persistence, fueled by the smoldering coals of  reality, and homo sapiens takes  another sudden leap forward, toward that elusive truth known as  humanity.

That  twenty-two year old was Frederic Storaska,  who in 1964 founded the National Rape and Assault Prevention Center (later  renamed the National Organization for the Prevention of Rape and  Assault , Inc. [NOPRA]).

NOPRA is a non-profit organization helping people understand and prevent rape and assault.
